Obama may speak at CSB/SJU, at least that’s what some want

The Record has received word that the CSB and SJU presidents signed a joint college and university letter last summer, inviting presidential hopeful Barack Obama or a campaign surrogate to speak at CSB/SJU before the election.  Record news editor, Kelsey Gustafson, heard of the signing, but can not confirm the contents of the letter or the original author.

I heard about (the letter) over the summer when I was working in the Admissions office. It was just some rumor that was circulating, so I heard the story from a few different sources,” Gustafson said in an email.

I initially heard about the letter being signed by the presidents, and only later heard that College Dems had started it. Either way, I don’t have a definite answer.”

Senior Alex Kurt, who has worked with the College Democrats in the past, said the club’s president, Joe Kane, has confirmed that the somebody, at least, has been attempting to solicit an Obama visit.

“Joe Kane… was wondering know (sic) how the Record got ahold of information regarding a proposal for Obama or a campaign surrogate to visit campus… basically, they were trying to keep it a secret,” Kurt said in an email.

The Record will conduct a full investigation for the Oct. 10 edition,

Crime of passion incites partisan tit for tat

At 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 12, five students made their way to the grassy area between Guild Hall and Benet Hall. Their actions at that time are considered by both campus authorities and other students to be vandalism, but were meant by the group itself to send a positive political message. Major CSB/SJU donor tied to corporate thievery

On Sept. 26, court papers were released that named Petters Group CEO, Tom Petters, as a primary suspect in a $100 million fraud investigation of the group, which has holdings in Sun Country Airlines and the Kodak camera company.  

Petters and his father, John Petters, are well-known around the CSB/SJU community.  In Oct., 2007, the younger Petters donated $5.3 million to CSB towards the establishment of The Tom Petters Center for Global Education.   Read the rest of this entry »
